Good And Bad Golf Swing Thoughts
By Jack Clarke
What the heck is a “swing thought”? I first came into contact with this term I when I started this great sport. It was in several golf articles and on the Golf Channel, pertaining to the mental aspects of the game. More specifically, it is the thought that you have the instant you begin your backswing. First we’ll cover things not to think about, then get into extensive research results and recommend some methods to get you on the right track. Bad swing thoughts: * Now what did that Golf Channel guy say again? * Should I exhale or inhale on my backswing? * OK, now DON’T hit it into the lake! D-OH! * My swing feels like an unfolded lawnchair! * Did I leave the oven on? * Everybody’s watching! Wait till they see me CRUSH this ball! * I can reach that green as long as I swing really, really hard! Good Swing Thoughts: The best swing thoughts are those that match your personality, and put you in a relaxed state of mind. Below are a variety of good swing thoughts for a plethora of different personality scenarios. Firstly, here are the old standbyes: * ‘Tempo is everything.’ * ‘Be the ball.’ * ‘Nice and Smooth.’ Secondly, for overachievers: * ‘I am Tiger Woods.’ * ‘…350 yds…350 yds…350 yds.’ * ‘I will hit that squirrel sitting on the fairway, on the right side of his head, right above the little white spot’ And finally, the Zen approach: * Ebb and Flow. Ebb and Flow. Ebb and Flow… * I will maintain awareness of my entire posture as much as possible and watch the breath reach and leave my lower abdomen. * I am the light of self-control. It is best to think about nothing. However, how do we think about thinking about nothing? What a Conundrum. After consulting with my top psychological advisor, we came to this conclusion… The only way to think about not thinking about anything is to think about something that will occupy, or confuse the frontal lobe area into a state of confusion or misdirected concentration. Thus, we call the winning method the perplexation syndrome. More specifically, our research scored these four thoughts the highest out of thousands tested. Think of these things, and you will save hours of frustration, and have instant success to the mental side of the game! * What is mustard made out of? * What if my hands were made of sandpaper? Could I more effectively scratch mosquito bites and/or poison ivy? * Who would win in a fight, Mighty Mouse or Superman? * What was my favorite episode of Different Strokes? (This one works good on Par 3’s). Happy Golfing!
